A relatively overlooked Death Metal outfit, EXPERIMENT FEAR are fine representatives of the early 90's wave of brutality that spawned forth from the Florida swamps and swept across America like a ravenous plague. Assuming The Godform would appear to be the one and only effort from this Illinois foursome and a shame it is because this is an album not to be taken lightly. The band are a ferocious Death Metal beast with thick, distorted guitar savagery and subhuman vocals from the most abysmal pit. EXPERIMENT FEAR don't pioneer much here but they do uphold the most aggressive traditions of the genre and do it like fine upstanding Death Metal citizens. Above average musicianship covers for the lack of originality and the decent production is justice enough to deliver enough viscerally-charged aural mayhem to send any fan of this sort of grotesquely orchestrated butchery into fits of ecstasy. If I was more impressed with this end of the Metal spectrum, I'd be doing wild twisters in my living room. However, depth is lacking and while the band do what they do very well, I suppose I've gotten spoiled with the fruits the scene has offered over more recent years. For its time, this is quite good and I'd be foolish not to recommend Assuming The Godform to the vast underworld masses of blood-thirsty CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEICIDE, MALEVOLENT CREATION, and MASSACRE fans. Not likely to remain in print for much longer, get this before its extinct and experience the experiment yourself!
